Sketchbook project – first sketches

November 8, 2011

Here are my first sketches for The Sketchbook Project 2012  ….. a sketch every 3 days for 3 months.  www.arthousecoop.com

My theme  is ‘a path through the forest’.

This already feels limiting- so ‘the forest ‘ could be the jungle of life??!!

Judging Art

October 7, 2011

I’ve been judging the Drawings in the current Saatchi online ‘Showdown’. There are over 2000 entries and you get to judge which artwork you like the most from pairs of these entries. There are several rounds until a winner is declared. It is a very interesting exercise, in that you have to decide just what it is that you like/dislike in various works of art.

As I have been working through the pairs I have made notes about my judgements.

YES votes for: great skill; simplicity; sense of humour; originality/creativity; interesting ie not boring; balance; line-graduation & contrast; obviously enjoyable to do; contrasts – hard and soft/ worked areas and unworked areas ……..

NO votes for:  copy of a photo;  digitally assisted;  cliché;  too clever;  cute;  overworked;  too many techniques;  needs completion somehow;  obvious clichéd message……..

Have a go! What is your criteria for judging?

Harmony is an internet drawing program. You can get some great results……with a bit more practice.

I like the web drawing tool best.

Movement

July 12, 2010

Found this wonderful artist Jaanika Peerna (Estonian who now lives in NY) who works on Mylar – a plasic PET film. Love the shadows produced with cut mylar and spot lights.

Wall installation, push pins, mylar, lights

detail: Embracing Gusts 2009  Wax pencil on mylar

SO……….. I hunted down some mylar (from the wonderful Neil’s Art Store in Brunswick) and drew on it with wax pencil trying to show movement…….

I can see a bird in this one

Then some Beach wind on ordinary cartridge paper

This sketch was meant to be Russ Wilkinson but he’s hard to recognize here.

Then did one with no figure, only the background. I liked the shape of the ‘no figure’ but it made me think of Toad in ‘Wind in the Willows’ so I coloured it in Photoshop.
